Women's Lacrosse Opens season with a 10-7 win over Elmira

 

Albany, NY —Russell Sage College's women's lacrosse team hosted the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match. The Gators posted a 10-7 win to stand at 1-0 on the young season, while Elmira drops to 1-1. The victory on opening day for the Gators was the second opening day win in the team's 13-year history and the first since 2014 when RSC beat Elms, 12-9 on March 5, 2014.

RSC led 8-5 at the half and six different players figure into the scoring efforts on the day. Rookie Alexandra Queeney (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) opened her collegiate career with a hat trick. She added two caused turnovers with a ground ball in the contest. Sophomore attacker Caroline Musinski (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) picked up where she left off in the team's abbreviated 2020 season as she added three point s on two goals with an assist, while also adding six draws to her efforts on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore Samantha Shafer (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady) scored a pair of goals and was 1-1 on free position attempts. She had four ground ball pickups with a draw control and five caused turnovers.

Senior attacker Alex Franco (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) connected for two points on a goal and assist elevating her career resume to include 28 career points on 15 goals with 13 assists. She is currently sixth in career assists at RSC.

Elmira's rookie attacker Emily Ferguson (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) led her team with five goals and is the team's leading scorer with 10 goals this spring. Sophomore Kendra Heath (Corning, NY/Corning-Painted Post) had three points on a goal with two assists.

In goal for the Gators, senior Carly Plaisance (Bennington, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) earned the win as she turned away 11 of the 22 shots she faced allowing seven goals in her 60 minutes of work. Elmira's senior Krystyna Lilland (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) worked the first half, making seven saves with eight goals allowed and suffered the loss (0-1). At the half, sophomore Alex Cox (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) came in and recorded 10 saves with only two goals allowed in net.

Sage returns to action on March 24 hosting Utica College in a 5 p.m. Empire 8 contest.
