Albany, NY—Russell Sage College's men's soccer team opened the new season on Thursday night hosting Nazareth College in an Empire 8 contest. The game went to overtime as the Gators earned the 2-1 win on a golden goal by senior defender Nathan Ficht (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) added the game-winning goal just 1:42 into the overtime period. The goal was the first of his career for Ficht as he helped the Gators a 1-0 mark on the young season. Nazareth drops to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8.
RSC's rookie Vinny Terrone (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) spotted the Gators to a 1-0 lead at 5:50 on a feed from senior forward Griffin Goodemote (Broadalbin, NY/Broadalbin Perth). Nazareth tied the action with 18:33 left in regulation as freshman midfielder Cooper LaValley (Rochester, NY/Greece Arcadia) scored his third goal on the season on a pass from junior Zein Mohamen (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta).
RSC took the early advantage into the overtime and capitalized on the opportunity as Ficht kicked the ball in for the game-winner of the initial headed ball to propel the Gators to the victory.
RSC's rookie keeper Anthony Molina (Brentwood, NY/Brentwood) earned his first career win after making three saves in the action, while Nazareth's rookie Trevor Clark (Fillmore, NY/Fillmore) took the loss and is now 1-1 after making two saves in the action.
