Keuka Park, NY–Sage's men's volleyball team opened play at the Keuka College Tournament on Friday night with a 3-2 win over Hiram College (16-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-12, 15-9). With the victory Sage is now 5-15 overall, while Hiram drops to 8-8.
Sage's junior Austin Muntz (Hannacroix, NY/Greenville) had eight aces in the match, which ranks No. 2 all-time for aces in a match. He added three digs with three block assists and 13.5 points as well as Sage came back from being down 2-0 to win the last three sets.
Senior middle hitter Shane Wenz (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) had 23.0 points after amassing 19 kills with a .267 attack percentage and added 16 digs with three total blocks.
Senior captain Jarod Martel (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) also had a double-double with 13 digs and 12 kills and picked up 12.0 points, while senior Scott Sanders (Los Angeles, CA/Taft) racked up 10 kills with 15.5 points after also adding seven digs, two aces and four total blocks. Junior setter Ryan Jennings (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Township) added 42 setting assists with two kills as the Gators combined for 12 aces.
The Gator record book is continuing to be rewritten with every match. Wenz is fifth in career kills with 662 and is also fifth in points with 847.0. He is third in solo blocks (55), third in block assists (154) and third in total blocks (209), while also now ranking 10th with his 340 digs. Jennings is second with his 1,635 career setting assists and is now 10th with his 52 career aces. Sanders is seventh in career kills with 483 kills, while also stand fourth in block assists with 118. He has moved into fourth with his 156 total blocks, while ranking seventh in career points with 626.0 points.
Sage will be in action on March 7 facing Randolph Macon at noon and Keuka College at 2 p.m. in the final match of the invitational.
