Plattsburgh, NY—The Sage Colleges' women's volleyball team opened the new season on Friday competing at the Plattsburgh State Cardinal Invitational. Sage faced Plymouth State in the opener, but fell 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 26-24). Sage then faced the host Cardinals of Plattsburgh State pushing them to four sets, but falling 3-1 (28-26, 20-25, 25-20, 25-17). Sage drops to 0-2 on the young season.
Against Plymouth State, sophomore outside hitter Emma Parkington (Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional) added seven kills with a .312 attack percentage to go with her five digs and 8.5 points. As a rookie, Parkington earned a spot on the Empire 8 Sportswoman Team after finishing the season with a with a team-best 223.0 points on 174 kills with 23 aces and 47 blocks and 169 digs. She earned three selections as the Empire 8 Rookie of the Week in her first campaign at Sage.
Graduate performer Miranda Nethaway (Fonda, NY/Fonda Fultonville) added 5.0 points with her four kills and a pair of block assists. Senior outside hitter Megan Ryder (Broadalbin, NY/Broadalbin Perth) had eight digs with four kills and an ace. She also finished with a .944 receiving percentage after making just one reception error in 17 attempts. Junior setter Courtney Formosa (Waterford, NY/Waterford-Halfmoon) led the Gators with her four aces and connected for three digs in the match, while senior outside hitter Gabby Rowell (Morrisonville, NY/Beekmantown) picked up five digs with four kills and a solo block with a block assist for the Gators.
Against Plattsburgh State, the Gators fell 3-1. Rookie defensive specialist Elaina Moisidis (Albany, NY/Albany) erupted for 14 digs against Plattsburgh, while Parkington finished with 12 points on nine kills with a pair of aces and 17 digs. She posted a .817 receiving percentage after making 5 errors on 22 attempts. Nethaway added 11.0 points after posting eight kills with four digs, two aces and a pair of block assists. Rowell added eight kills with five digs for the Gators. Ryder also netted 10 points after racking up 14 digs with eight kills, an ace and a block assist.
Sage is back in action on day two of the Plattsburgh State Best Western Ground Round Classic taking on Hartwick College at 11 a.m. and Colby-Sawyer at 1 p.m.
