Keuka spoils Sage home opener, 4-3

Albany, NY—The Sage Colleges' field hockey team hosted the Wolves of Keuka College on Saturday afternoon and UAlbany's Alumni Field in the Gators' 2019 home opener. Keuka earned a 4-3 win to improve to 1-6 on the year, while Sage drops to 1-4 on the year.

Sage struck first as junior forward Micalli Johnston (Plattsburgh, NY/Saranac) scored at the 8:53 mark of the first quarter on a pass from sophomore forward Sara O'Connor (Rexford, NY/Niskayuna). Keuka's junior forward Nicole Wilson (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) tied the action off a feed from the right by senior Alysa Maddaleno (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) at 3:40 left in the first quarter to tie the action. Sophomore forward Alyssa Muszak (Centereach, NY/Newfield) gave the Wolves a 2-1 lead with her score at the 25:00 mark of the match in the second quarter. Rookie Vanessa Wilkins (Syracuse, NY/Circero-North Syracuse) gave Keuka a 3-1 lead with her score.

Sage cut the lead as Johnston scored her second goal of the game at the 15:45 mark of second quarter on a pass from O'Connor. Keuka led 4-2 in the third quarter as Maddaleno scored again off a corner on an assist from Wilkins and sophomore Laura Ramsey (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) at the 37:55 mark.

Johnston cut the lead with her third goal of the match at the 59:14 mark, but it was not enough as the Gators could not cut the lead and fell 4-3.

Keuka's senior goalie Kassidy Valentine (Glendora, CA/Glendora) earned the win after making one save with three goals allowed in 60 minutes of work. Gator sophomore goalie   Abigayle Greier (Elma, NY/Iroquois Central) took the loss after making four saves in the action.

Johnston leads the Gators scoring offense this fall with her 14 points off six goals with two assists. O'Connor is the all-time leader for the young program with her 20 career points as she and Johnston both have seven career goals, while O'Connor also tops the career assist record with six assists.

Sage will be back in action on September 18 hosting Centenary College at 7 p.m. at UAlbany's Alumni Field.
