Albany, NY —Sage's men's basketball squad returned home to start a three-game homestand at Kahl Gym Saturday afternoon. Sophomore guard Jalon Borders (Bartow, FL/Bartow) scored a game high 26 points with 12 rebounds and three assists to lead the Gators to a 73-63 Empire 8 victory over Hartwick College. The Gators, who won both meetings against the Hawks, improved to 11-9 overall and 4-5 in the Empire 8 while Hartwick fell to 11-9 and 3-6 in league play.
Borders set a career high and also scored the most points of any Gator this season and also surpassed his previous rebounding total in the contest. He recorded his third career double-double, all three coming this season. He made 10 of 20 shots and six of seven at the line. Sophomore guard Tyler Mitchell (Bronx, NY/All Hallows) scored a career-high 20 points and sophomore guard Deonte Sherwood (Orange Park, FL/Oakleaf) led all players with six assists. The Gators shot 47%, including 52% in the second half when they outscored the guests, 41-29. Sage had a 39-36 rebounding advantage and forced 19 turnovers.
Hartwick was led by senior forward Kyle Bradshaw (Tinton Falls, NY/Manasqua), who had a double-double of his own with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Pat Garey (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) scored a team best 17 points and junior guard Tommy Kelly (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) added 10 points for Hartwick. The Hawks shot 37%.
Senior guard/forward Anthony Mitchell (Bronx, NY/Salesian) continues his climb in the Gator record book as he is 10th in scoring with 549 points, seventh in rebounding (343), fifth in assists (164) and seventh in blocks (44).
Sage hosts Houghton at Kahl Gym in an Empire 8 game next Friday, February 7 at 5:30 p.m.
