Elmira, NY — The Sage Colleges' women's soccer team travelled to Elmira College on Saturday for the Empire 8 opener. The Gators collected a 6-1 road win to improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the league as Elmira drops to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
The Gators got a game-high effort from sophomore forward Natalie Ricci (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) after she finished with two goals and three assists in the action for seven points.
Sage led 2-0 at the half after Ricci and junior Stephanie Mason (Berne, NY/Berne-Knox-Westerloo) each scored to help the Gators on the day.
To open the second half of play, senior Kristen Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) scored on a feed from Ricci. Rookie Julia Gerringer (Lagrange, NY/Arlington) scored her first career goal before newcomer Julia Petreikis (Deansboro, NY/Clinton) also found the net for her first career tally.
Ricci took over the Sage scoring race after her performance on Saturday.
For the game, Sage took 27 shots and held Elmira to 18 as rookie keeper Kallan Shertzer (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) as she earned the win with seven saves and one goal allowed in the action. Elmira's Cassidy Buchman played 48:24 with two saves and two goals allowed, while Ally Knorr-Anderson played 41:36 with six saves and four goals allowed for the Soaring Eagles.
Sage is back in action on September 24 hosting Skidmore College in a 7 p.m. non-conference game at ACP Stadium.
