SAGE CANCELS SPRING 2020 ATHLETIC EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

Albany, NY —In response to the public health crisis concerning COVID-19 (2019 Novel Coronavirus), The Sage Colleges' Department of Athletics has cancelled all spring varsity athletic contests and practices as well as special events for the remainder of this academic year effective March 14, 2020. This includes the upcoming Sage Alumni Games and gatherings that had been planned for the men's basketball team, the men's soccer team, and our women's soccer team that had planned in the month of April. Additionally, Sage will cancel the Boys' Basketball Spring Break Camp, the Men's and Women's Soccer ID Clinics planned for later this spring.

In addition to the growing number of schools and conferences suspending athletic contests for the remainder of the spring season, the NCAA announced on March 12 that all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships are cancelled due to the growing COVID-19 pandemic.

NCAA President Mark Emmert announced the decision late Thursday afternoon, noting, "This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."

In addition to the NCAA's announcement, the Empire 8 announced on March 12 that, pursuant to the decision by the NCAA on Thursday to cancel the remainder of its winter and spring championships due to the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, the Empire 8 Presidents have unanimously agreed to cancel all remaining Empire 8 regular-season and championship competition effective immediately.

"Please know that I share in the sadness and profound disappointment within our athletic community that comes along with this difficult news," Sage Athletic Director Sandy Augstein-Collins said. "My heart is broken for our student-athletes just beginning their seasons. My heart is broken for our student-athletes not being able to finish their seasons. My heart is shattered for our seniors because this is not the way a senior season should go. Gators, we are resilient, we are family, and we are all feeling these emotions. Let's lean on each other in the coming days and weeks as we all traverse such an unknown landscape in college athletics."
