Albany, NY–Sage's men's volleyball team hosted the Mavericks of Medaille College on Friday night in a non-conference match. The Mavericks collected a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-20, 25-11) to earn the first win of the season as they are now 1-0, while Sage drops to 0-6.
Leading the Gators on Friday night were seniors Shane Wenz (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) and Scott Sanders (Los Angeles, CA/Taft). They both had eight kills apiece as Sanders had a .428 attack percentage with one ace, one dig and three total blocks. Wenz had a .368 attack percentage with seven digs and four total blocks with his 10.5 points. Sanders has a team-best 11.0 points in the match.
Sage's senior Jarod Martel (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) picked up six kills with two digs for the night. Junior setter Ryan Jennings (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Township) added 21 setting assists with four digs and kill.
Sophomore Deshawn Fleary (Newark, NJ/Immaculate Conception Montclair) added three kills with four digs for the Gators. Junior defensive specialist Dan Mackey (Westerlo, NY/Greenville Central) had seven digs in the match, while junior Austin Muntz (Hannacroix, NY/Greenville) had a block assist with a kill.
As the 2020 continues, so does the assault on the program's record book. After Friday's match Wenz is now sixth in career kills with 450, while also standing third in solo blocks (47), third in block assists (133) and third in total blocks (180) and also seventh in points (606.5). Jennings ranks third with his 1,242 career setting assists.
Sage will travel to Springfield College on Saturday, January 25 for a 1 and 3 p.m. match as they will also face Elmira College. Medaille College travels to Rivier College for two matches tomorrow as well at Noon and 2 p.m. with Nichols College.
