Houghton stymies Gators in E8 play

Albany, NY — The Sage Colleges' women's soccer team hosted Houghton College in an Empire 8 match on Saturday afternoon in conjunction with their Coaches vs. Cancer contest. Houghton posted a 2-0 win over the Gators in Empire 8 play to improve to 6-7-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the league. The loss puts Sage at 7-7 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

The two teams played to a scoreless tie through the first half before the Highlanders pushed through with a goal at 72:47 by junior midfielder Kealy DeForest (Adams, NY/South Jefferson) for her fifth goal of the season and what would be her second game-winner of the year. Sophomore forward Sierra Neddo (Beaver Falls, NY/Beaver River) added an insurance goal at 76:47 for her team-leading 10th goal of the year.

Sage had some chances including a direct kick in the final eight minutes of the match but Houghton's senior keeper Rachael Fortney (Mayville, NY/Chautagua Lake) made the save to keep the Gators off the scoreboard. She finished

With six saves in earning the win as she improves to 2-0-1 with her first solo shutout of the year. Sage's rookie keeper Kallan Shertzer (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) made seven saves but falls to 7-7 in goal this season.

Sage is back in action on October 22 travelling to Hamilton College for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference contest.
