Sage Women's Tennis Team Earns E8 Tournament berth, despite loss to SJFC

Latham, NY—The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team hosted the Cardinals of St. John Fisher College in an Empire 8 match held at Tri-City Fitness Center today. The Cardinals posted an 8-1 win over Sage to remain unbeaten in the conference and are now 7-2 overall and 6-0 in the league to claim the No. 1 seed in the 2019 Empire 8 Women's Tennis Tournament. Sage drops to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in the E8 and will also compete in the Empire 8 Tournament next weekend, a Sage first.

The lone win for the Gators on the day came at No. 3 doubles as senior Alison Trudo (Plattsburgh, NY/Beekmantown) and junior Molly Cochrane (Ravena, NY/Ravena-Coeymans) got an 8-6 victory over sophomore Jacqueline Chouinard (Wakefield, MA/Austin Prep) and junior Valerie Morgans (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool). With their win at doubles, the Gator duo is 9-2 this fall.

At No. 2 doubles, SJFC's sophomore Mikayla Saffran (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) and graduate player Zuzanna Pociecha (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) added an 8-1 win over Sage's tandem of senior Rebecca Jackson (Saugerties, NY/John A. Coleman) and sophomore Taylor Gillespie (Cobleskill, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) handing the pair their first loss of the season as they are now 10-1.

Sage's head coach Tom Fashouer is in sixth season as the women's tennis coach and has guided the team to their first Empire 8 playoff appearance this fall with their success. On Sunday as the Gators host Hartwick College, he is looking to tie a mark he set in 2017 with the team after they captured 10 wins, marking his personal best showing with the team.  The 10 wins, which ties the program's mark for the most wins in a season.  The 2008 teams set the record for most wins in a season after going 10-5 with a 7-2 record in the Skyline Conference. Sages 2017 Gators tied the record for most women's tennis wins in a season (10) which was set by the 2008 Gators that went 10-5 overall and 7-2 in the Skyline Conference.

Sage is back in action on October 13 hosting Hartwick College in a 1 p.m. Empire 8 match held at Albany Academy.
