Hard-fought UVC match goes to NYU despite valiant effort by Gators

Albany, NY— The Sage College men's volleyball team hosted the Violets of New York University in a United Volleyball Conference match in Kahl Gym. NYU posted the 3-0 win over the Gators in a hard-fought match, 26-24, 25-20, 26-24. NYU improves to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in the UVC, while Sage drops to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the league.

NYU combined for a .427 attack percentage in the match and a .922 team reception percentage with only 5 errors in 59 attempts. Junior opposite Evan Lindley (Evanston, IL) had 13 kills with a .476 attack percentage, while combining for 15.5 points and five digs, three block assists and an ace. Junior middle Neil Ferraro (Newton, MA) added 13.0 points with 11 kills and a .769 attack percentage in the match. Junior Adam Lee (Pacific Palisades, CA) picked up seven kills with an ace, two digs and 8.0 points. Rookie setter Ryan Whealen (Fenton, MO) led the squad with his 43 setting assists and had two kills and two digs.

Junior middle hitter Scott Sanders (Los Angeles, CA/Taft) added nine kills with a .667 attack percentage for the Gators. He also picked up three aces and added 12.0 points. Sage's junior outside hitter Shane Wenz (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) contributed eight kills with a .375 attack percentage with an ace and 10.5 points for Sage.

Senior co-captain Zackery Karl (West Monroe, NY/Central Square) collected six kills and had three digs and a block assist, junior outside hitter Jarod Martel (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) finished with three kills and five digs with a pair of block assists.  Sophomore setter Ryan Jennings (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Township) racked up 24 setting assists with two kills, a dig, and an ace. Gator co-captain Mike Basile (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) also netted five digs in the match with one kills.

On the 2019 season, Sanders has surpassed the 100 kill plateau as he leads the Gators with 107 kills and 134.5 points. Karl has a team-best 25 aces on the season, while moving into the No. 6 spot on the career list with his 67 aces. Wenz is currently 10th in career kills with 327 and is now third all-time with his 150 career total blocks. Wenz is currently 10th in career points with 454.0 points and is 10th in career sets played (291). Karl surpassed the 500 career point plateau on Saturday as he now has 507.0 points and is ninth and is also 8th with 367 kills.

Sage is back in action on Sunday afternoon hosting No. 2 ranked Stevens in a UVC Match now starting at Noon on March 3. NYU returns to action on March 9 hosting Springfield College at 3 p.m.
