Albany, NY—Sophomore forward/center Joshua Gonzalez (Albany, NY/Canajoharie) had a double-double with a career best 13 points and a career and game high 14 rebounds to lead The Sage Colleges men's basketball team to a 102-88 non-league win over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Tuesday night at Kahl Gym. The Gators improved to 2-3 while the Trailblazers now stand 1-4.
Five Gators scored in double figures in the contest, which produced a season high in points. The 102 tied for the sixth most points by Sage (last done December 7, 2016 at the Albany College of Pharmacy). It was the 12th time in program history that the Gators hit the century mark.
Junior guard/forward Isaiah Scurry (Albany, NY/Albany) had 16 points while senior forward Chris Kidd (Troy, NY/Beacon) and junior guard Darius Denmark (Orlando, FL/Evans) joined Gonzalez with 13 points each. Graduate student Frane Larose (Miami, FL/Miami Beach Senior) scored 10 points for the Gators and Denmark and sophomore guard Anthony Mitchell (Bronx, NY/Salesian) each had a game best six assists. Sage shot 48% and each team had 47 rebounds. Gonzalez did all his work in just 23 minutes before fouling out.
The teams combined for 55 fouls and 70 free throw attempts along with 46 turnovers in the fast paced, physical contest. Four players fouled out on the night.
Antione Montgomery led all players with 18 points for MCLA, and Ki-Shawn Monroe scored 16 with four assists. Hayden Bird had a double-double for the Trailblazers with 12 points and 11 rebounds and Joaquin Scullark scored 13 with 10 coming from Gerald Herbert. MCLA shot 35% for the game.
Sage led by 11 at the half at 49-38, and led by as many as 26 with eight minutes left at 85-59.
Sage is back in action Saturday to open Empire 8 play against Stevens at 4 p.m. at Kahl Gym. MCLA is at St. Joseph (Conn.) Saturday at 1 p.m.
