Pittsford, NY— The Sage College men's volleyball team was in action on Saturday in a neutral match held at Nazareth College with the Mustangs of Medaille College. Medaille collected a 3-0 win (25-23, 25-21, 26-24) and stands at 5-10 overall, while Sage is now 6-13.
Sage junior outside hitter Shane Wenz (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) led the Gators with his 14 kills and 14.0 points in the action with Medaille. He added three digs with a .360 attack percentage. Rookie opposite Deshawn Fleary (Newark, NJ/Immaculate Conception Montclair) added seven digs with three kills in the match.
For the Gators, senior co-captain Zackery Karl (West Monroe, NY/Central Square) racked up 9.0 points on seven kills with three digs, a solo block and two block assists. He was 17-1 on receiving attempts as well in the action. Junior outside hitter Jarod Martel (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) also finished with three kills and three digs for the Gators while finishing with no reception errors in 11 attempts.
Gator co-captain Mike Basile (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) had five kills with three digs and a block assist, while adding a .958 receiving percentage with only one error on 23 attempts.
Sophomore setter Ryan Jennings (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Township) racked up 30 setting assists with a pair of kills and aces while adding six digs.
Sage's team members are making their run in the Gator record book this season. Wenz is currently 9th in career kills with 354 and is now third all-time with his 158 career total blocks. He is also ninth now in career points with 489.0.
Karl has 528.5 career points putting him sixth in points with 385 career kills. He is 8th on the Gator career kill list.
Sage is back in action on Saturday, March 23 hosting SUNY-Poly and Ramapo in a tri0match. Prior to the 3 p.m. contest with Ramapo, Sage will honor their senior Zackery Karl in conjunction with Senior Day.
