Sage falls twice on Saturday including a tough match to #1 ranked Springfield

Springfield, MA— The Sage Colleges' men's volleyball team travelled to Springfield College on Saturday for a non-conference tri-match. The Gators fell to St. Joseph's College-Long Island, 3-0 (25-15, 25-17, 25-19) and then fell to the No. 1 ranked team in the country, the Pride of Springfield College, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-21). Sage's team drops to 5-5, while Springfield is 10-1 and St. Joe's-LI is 6-2.

Against St. Joe's, junior middle hitter Scott Sanders (Los Angeles, CA/Taft) had a .294 attack percentage with eight kills, two solo blocks and a block assist. Senior co-captain Zackery Karl (West Monroe, NY/Central Square) also contributed five kills with only one receiving error in 15 receiving attempts for a .938 receiving percentage.

Junior outside hitters Shane Wenz (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) and Jarod Martel (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) both added four kills apiece, while Wenz had four digs and was perfect with no receiving errors.

Sage's sophomore co-captain Mike Basile (Feeding Hills, MA/Agawam) picked up four kills with three digs and had just three receiving errors on 27 attempts for a .900 receiving percentage.

Sophomore setter Ryan Jennings (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick Township) handed out 20 setting assists with an ace and four digs.

Against Springfield, Jennings had two aces with one block assist, one kill and 18 setting assists. Sanders picked up five kills with a .273 attack percentage with a dig and a block assist.  Martel added five kills with three digs and had no receiving errors on five attempts. Karl added four kills and two digs for the Gators. Wenz led the Gators with 7.0 points in the action after collecting five kills with four digs and a pair of solo blocks. No. 1 ranked Springfield combined for 10 aces in the match and had an impressive .397 attack percentage as well.

Sage is back in action on Wednesday, February 13 hosting Elms College in a 6 p.m. match. The first 25 fans in attendance at Wednesday's match will get Sage Gator beanie babies.
