Albany, NY—The Sage Colleges' men's tennis team hosted Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Thursday afternoon in the Gators' 2019 home opener. The match was a tight contest decided by the tie-breaker at the first doubles. The Trailblazers posted the 5-4 win to improve to 2-2, while the Gators drop to 0-2 on the young season.
At first singles, Sage's senior Henry Golden (Troy, NY/Troy) posted the win at No. 1 singles with a third set tie-breaker, besting Charles Najimy, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-8). Junior Tyler Schnaible (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) swept his match at No. 2 singles, beating senior Matt Bluteau (Troy, NY/Cohoes), 6-2, 6-4.
Junior Christian Rosario (Troy, NY/Troy) added a 6-4, 7-5 win over senior Nick Castle (Waterford, NY/Waterford-Halfmoon) at No. 3 singles. Sage sophomore Mitesh Joshi (Lake George, NY/Lake George) added a three set win at No. 5 singles to lead the Gators in singles' play.
MCLA swept the three doubles matches and the No. 1 doubles decided the match as Bluteau and Najimy bested Golden and Schnaible, 8-7 (10-4) to aid in the Trailblazers' win.
Sage returns to action on March 30 opening Empire 8 play on Saturday against Elmira College. The match will now take place indoors at the Murray Athletic Center in Horseheads, NY. Additionally, Sage's home match slated for March 31 against SUNY-Delhi has been moved to taking place indoors at SUNY-Delhi for a 1 p.m. indoor match with the Broncos.
