Gonzalez leads Gators to 106-97 win over Delhi

Albany, NY—Sophomore forward/center Joshua Gonzalez (Albany, NY/Canajoharie) scored a career high 28 points and tied his career rebound high with 14 to lead The Sage Colleges' men's basketball team to a 106-97 victory over SUNY-Delhi on Thursday night in Kahl Gym in a non-conference contest. The match-up was the first meeting for the two teams. Sage is now 3-5 and SUNY-Delhi is 4-5.

The Gators had six players in double figures while posting the most points since 106 against Mount Saint Vincent on January 31, 2015. That total of 106 is now tied with the MSV game for fourth most all-time. Senior forward Chris Kidd (Troy, NY/Beacon) scored 18 points for Sage and junior forward Christian Larson (Jacksonville, FL/Oakleaf) scored 16 to match his career high. Junior Isaiah Scurry (Albany, NY/Albany) also finished with 16 points for Sage, while junior guard Darius Denmark (Orlando, FL/Evans) and sophomore forward/center Anthony Mitchell (Bronx, NY/Salesian) added 10 each. Graduate guard Frane Larose (Miami, FL/N. Miami Beach Senior) set a career high with 10 assists for the Gators.

Sage shot 59% for the night and had a dominant night on the boards with 55 rebounds (two shy of the season high), while the Broncos had 36 boards. Sage made a season best 10 threes.

The Broncos also had six players in double figures led by 16 points each from Justin Daoud and Saquan Goland. Mavenson Therneus scored 13 along with Norman Wilson and Jordan Fragale had 12 while William Knight added 10. Daoud had a team best eight rebounds and Delhi shot 53%. The Broncos took 84 of the 162 shot attempts in the game.

The first half was fast paced and featured 81 shots as the Gators held a 59-48 lead and a 26-15 rebounding advantage. Sage led by as many as 15 in the half and never trailed in the first 20 minutes. Larson already had 14 points in the first half, including making four three-pointers.

Sage led by as many as 20 after a three pointer by Scurry with 13:17 left in the second made it 82-62. That capped a 15-3 home run. But Delhi got as close as five at 97-92 with 1:04 left. The Gators put the game away making nine free throws in the final minute.

Sage is back in action on Saturday at SUNY-Poly for a non-league game at 2 p.m. and returns home December 30 hosting the Spartans of Castleton University in a 1 p.m. non-conference match-up in Kahl Gym. SUNY-Delhi is back in action on December 8 travelling to Houghton College for a 4 p.m. non-league game.
