Leggett breaks school record in 3,000 meter run as Gators excel at Vassar Meet

 Sage' women's track and field squad competed on Saturday at the Vassar College Invitational. In the women's competition, Vassar won the team crown with a score of 171, while Sage finished in seventh place with a score of 28 in the field of 10 teams.  

For the Gator women on Saturday, junior captain Sagan Leggett (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) broke the program's record in the 3,000 meter run as she posted a time of 11:47.22 to take home fifth place She broke the record set in 2013 by Alaina Krueger (11:57) at the SUNY-Delhi Invitational. 

Head Track and Field Coach, Zachary Williams noted, "We had some student-athletes run great races today, but the stand-out effort came from Sagan Leggett." Williams added, "She executed our race strategy perfectly and bettered the program record for the 3000 meter run by an impressive 10 seconds! Arianna Burns also had a great day as she made it to the finals in discus for a second meet in a row!"

Junior Victoria Opalka (Fort Johnson, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) took 12th place in the 1,500 meter run in 5:37.33.

Rookie Olivia Leonard (Waterford, NY/Waterford-Halfmoon) picked up a seventh in the 100 meter hurdles in 19.94, while taking ninth in the 400 meter hurdles with her time of 1:19.87.

In the 400 meter dash, rookie Sevi Travis (Cohoes, NY/Shaker) was 8th in 1:09.05 and rookie Heather Dilcher (Colonie, NY/Colonie Central) finished in 11th in 1:12.93.

In the women's 100 meter run, rookie Avian Pope (New York, NY/Manhattan Center for Science and Math) was the top finisher for the Gators as she posted a time of 14.02 to take third place just ahead of rookie Naya Green (Brooklyn, NY/KIPP) who took fourth in 14.07. Junior Kadedra Allen (Troy, NY/Troy) added an 18th in the 100 meter run in 16.63.  In the 200 meter run, Pope was 7th in 29.60, just ahead of Green who took 8th in 30.18.

The Gators also took fifth in the women's 4 x 400 relay in 4:42.14 behind the work of Travis, rookie Tariziana Thompson (Brussels, BE/Brussels American), Pope, and Dilcher.

Pope added a 10th place finish in the long jump with her mark of 3.75 meters, while rookie Arianna Burns (Malden Bridge, NY/Tech Valley) finished in seventh in the discus with her throw of 22.75 meters. She added an 8th place showing in the shot put with her mark of 5.89 meters.

Next up for the team, they will compete on April 29 at the Capital District Championship at RPI.
