Gators split on opening day; Sage delivers first win for Coach Trudeau in nightcap

Myrtle Beach, SC – Sage's softball team opened the 2018 season on Monday competing in South Carolina. The Gators are competing in the 2018 Fastpitch Dreams Tournament and marks the debut of the team's new head coach Jamie Trudeau. Sage dropped the first game 5-4 to Mt. Aloysius College, but rebounded with a 4-2 win over Penn College in the second game.

In the first game, the Mounties jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first. Sage tacked on four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning but could not tie the game. Sage was paced by the play of junior Kiersten Duncan (Millerton, NY/Taconic Hills) as she was 2-4 with an RBI and a double, while sophomore Brittany Brooks (North Bangor, NY/Salmon River Central) was also 2-4. Senior infielder Alexa Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) drove in a run, while adding a 2-4 effort at the plate. Senior pitcher Amy Hart (St. Johnsville, NY/Little Falls) was 1-3 with two RBI's and a run scored, but also took the loss in the circle (0-1) after fanning nine batters in the game.

In the nightcap, Sage collected the 4-1 win over Penn College as rookie pitcher Katerina Lagace (Newington, CT/Newington) collected the complete game win. She gave up just one run off seven hits, while fanning a pair in the circle. Alexa Silk added a pair of stolen bases to go with her 3-4 day at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Her younger sister, Kristen Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) added a stolen base and a run scored for Sage.

Rookie infielder Emily Agate (Franklin Square, NY/H. Frank Carey) added a 2-3 day with an RBI as well for Sage as they added their runs in the bottom of the third inning, fourth inning, fifth inning and the sixth inning to post the come from behind win after Penn College took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third.

Sage is back in action on Tuesday, March 6 facing Eastern Mennonite at 9:30 a.m. and Chatham at 5:30 p.m.
