Albany, NY- The Sage Colleges' women's soccer team hosted the Raptors of Bard College on Wednesday night in a non-conference match-up. Both teams entered the match unbeaten. Bard posted a 2-0 win with a pair of second half goals to hand the Gators their first loss of the season. Bard improves to 2-0, while Sage drops to 2-1.
With the release of the first NCAA Division III statistics earlier in the day, Sage's high powered offense was ranked No. 1 in Division III in total points (51), No. 1 in goals (20), No. 1 in pointer per game average (25.5), No. 1 in scoring offense (10.0), while standing tied for No. 1 in win-loss percentage (1.000) as well No. 1 in shots per game (48).
After a 0-0 tie at the half, Bard's rookie Mikaela Martiros (Rutland, VT/Long Trail School) collected the first goal of the night at the 47:04 mark on a misplayed ball of the defense for her second goal of the season. At 68:38, Bard's tandem of senior Avalon Qian (San Francisco, CA/Drew School) and senior Carla Sanchez (McAllen, TX/McAllen) hooked up for the score to give the Raptors a 2-0 lead that would hold up despite several near attempts by the Gators.
In goal for the Gators, junior Emma Augustine (Wawarsing, NY/Ellenville) made the start and played 45 minutes with no goals allowed. Rookie Lauren Paravella (Troy, NY/Troy) worked the second half for the Gators with two goals allowed in her first loss. Bard's sophomore Tessa Greenhaigh (Albany, NH/Kennett) collected the shutout win in the contest.
Next up for the Gators, they will travel to MCLA on Saturday, September 4 for a p.m. non-conference match. Bard College will be in action on September 9 competing in the Vassar College Tournament taking on Elmira College at 2 p.m.
