Albany, NY—The Sage Colleges' men's basketball squad hosted RPI on Tuesday night in Kahl Gym in the Gators' 2017-2018 home opener. The Engineers posted a 75-53 win over Sage to improve to 3-1 overall, while Sage drops to 1-2.
Junior guard Tom Horvat (Cranston, RI/Marianapolis Prep) finished the night with a game-high 20 points, after adding 15 points in the second half to lead RPI.
RPI held a 39-32 lead at the half and had a commanding edge on the boards. The Engineers had a 24-13 lead on the boards and sophomore Kevin Davis (Oxford, NY/Oxford Academy & Central School) had nine first half caroms. Junior forward Andreas Kontopidis (Sherborn, NY/Dover-Sherborn) led the team at the half with 11 points and hit 5-of-7 shots from the floor. Davis finished the night with 15 rebounds, including 10 defensive rebounds with a pair of assists, steals, and a block. Kontopidis added 16 points with four rebounds, and four assists to go with his two steals and a pair of blocks. Sophomore guard Mitchel Wayand (Saratoga Springs, NY/Stillwater) finished with 10 points off the bench for RPI.
For the Gators, junior Chris Kidd (Manhattan, NY/Beacon) had 11 points in the first half to lead Sage and led the team with 14 points on the night. Sophomore forward Anthony Mitchell (Bronx, NY/Salesian) collected six points in the first half and finished with 11 points for the game, while adding six rebounds with three assists and a pair of steals as well.
Junior center Kevin Lenehan (Delanson, NY/Duanesburg) connected for eight points with 12 rebounds and a pair of blocks for the Gators.
Sage is back in action on Tuesday, November 28 traveling to MCLA for a 7 p.m. non-conference match-up with the Trailblazers. RPI will host Clarkson University on December 1 for their 2017-2018 Liberty League opener at the ECAV at 8 p.m.
