Sage Soccer Teams Raise over $2,000 with Coaches vs. Cancer Efforts

Albany, NY – The Sage Colleges' women's and men's soccer teams joined forces this fall to help raise funds and eliminate cancer. Cancer affects everyone in one way or another.  This past Saturday, Sage's Soccer teams held their Coaches vs. Cancer contests in conjunction with the Gators' home Empire 8 soccer doubleheader with St. John Fisher College. The events helped to raise over $2,000 for the American Cancer Society as the teams worked all to collect donations at every home event and throughout the month of September.

Preparations for this event started back in August with both teams working to promote the event in the coming weeks. The Sage teams had a targeted fundraising goal of $1500, not an easy task for just about a month to prepare. According to Sage's head women's soccer coach Garrett Cobb the two soccer teams worked hard this last month with friends, family, local businesses and the Sage community to get the word out. On game-day the atmosphere was lively and the smell of fresh popcorn permeated the stands. The support from the crowd pushed the Gators on the field.

Sage's women's team was able to come from behind and earn a valuable double overtime tie with the league opponent, while the Gator men's soccer team also went to double overtime, collecting a 2-1 victory to make the events of the day a success on the field.

The excitement on the field was also matched by the support of the Sage soccer community by what was achieved by the work of the so many involved with the Sage Coaches vs. Cancer event.  By day's end, the teams had not only raised their goal of $1,500 but far exceeded the goal as they raised over $2,000.

Cobb remarked, "We would like to thank all that participated and plan to grow this event in the future." He added, "The amount of hard work the players put in and the amazing support that came about was truly tremendous.  Cancer effects everyone in some way and for the Sage soccer programs to give back even just a small amount is a great accomplishment.  I'm extremely proud of how our teams really took this and built it up in such a short amount of time. It shows the character these players have!"
