Troy, NY- The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team opened the 2017 season on Saturday afternoon at Prospect Park hosting the Eagles of Green Mountain College in the season opener for both squads. Sage collected the 9-0 win to open the year and improves to 1-0 on the young season.
Sage's trio of captains, seniors Shanessa Mendoza (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield), Lindsey Tolman (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) and Samantha Dibbell (Hunter, NY/Tannersville Central) all posted wins in the action.
Playing at No. 1 singles, sophomore Sammantha Montague (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) posted a 6-1, 6-0 win over GMC's junior Paige Vlahos (Little Silver, NJ/Red Bank Catholic). Montague teamed at No. 1 doubles with sophomore Rebecca Jackson (Saugerties, NY/John A. Coleman) for an 8-3 win over the Eagles' pair of sophomores Claire Chapman (Litchfield, CT/Litchfield) and Janelle O'Connell (Colrain, MA/Mohawk Trail Regional).
Shanessa Mendoza was a double winner as well posting a win at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-3 and teamed at No. 2 doubles with Abbey Clobridge (West Sand Lake, NY/Averill Park) for the 8-0 win and a sweep of GMC. Shanessa's twin sister, Shanice Mendoza, a 2016 Skyline Conference All-Star Second Team pick last fall, also added two wins on Saturday.
Next up for the Gators they will travel to SUNY-Delhi for a match on September 5.
