PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Senior guard Jalon Borders (Bartow, FL/Bartow) became just the fourth Russell Sage College player to eclipse 1,000 career points this afternoon at St. John Fisher. The Gators (10-10/4-7 E8) were upended by the host Cardinals 88-80.
Borders (above), now with 1,012 points, achieved the milestone with 13:58 remaining in the first half. He finished with 14 points, five assists, and four steals in the Empire 8 Conference setback.
Senior guard Amani Cummings (Brooklyn, NY/Transit Tech) topped RSC with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Senior guard Tyler Mitchell (Bronx, NY/All Hallows) added 15 points, while senior forward/center Stuart Phair (Canberra, Australia/Tyler Christian School) contributed 12 points on 4-9 shooting, nine rebounds, and four blocks.
St. John Fisher (16-5/10-2 E8) had three players score in twin figures in the E8 matinee. Senior forward Brendan Trapper led the way with 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Junior forward Daniel Cook, the reigning E8 Player of the Year and a preseason All-American, registered a double-double of 17 points and 16 rebounds, and blocked four shots.
Trailing 46-36 at the break, RSC battled back early in the second half to stay within striking distance. The Gators were within four, 79-75, with 3:29 left on the clock, but the Cardinals reeled off the next eight points to secure their third-straight victory.
Looking ahead, RSC is slated to host Houghton on Friday at 7:30 pm.
