DAVENPORT, FL – The Russell Sage College baseball team faced Husson University on Tuesday evening in a pair of games at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. Husson took the first game, 8-0 and the nightcap 10-3 in a pair of seven inning contests. The Eagles move to 4-2, while RSC drops to 0-5.
In the first game, Husson jumped out to a 2-0 lead as Joshua Scott connected for a two run home run off RSC's pitcher Jalen Cuevas (Bronx, NY/Fordham).
The Gators got singles from Leandro Guzman (New Britain, CT/New Britain), Andrew Knapp (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet), Dillon Maxon (Troy, NY/Tamarac),and Zachary Figueras (Apopka, FL/Windermere).
Cuevas took the loss after yielding seven earned runs off eight hits with three strikeouts and six walks.
In the nightcap, Husson jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. RSC tacked on a run in the top of the first inning as Figueras tripled and was driven in by Guzman who had an RBI double. RSC added a pair of run in the top of the sixth but it was not enough to overcome Husson's early lead.
Figueras was 2 for 4 with a pair of runs scored, while Alex Andrew (Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber) was 2 for 3 with an RBI in the action.
Colby Phelps (Troy, NY/Tamarac) made the start for the Gators allowing six earned runs off two hits with four walks. Dylan Scherillo (Drums, PA/New Dorp) worked 5.1 innings in relief and fanned seven with four earned runs off six hits.
Looking ahead, RSC plays on March 9 against Mt. St. Joseph's at 10 a.m. at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.
