TROY, NY – With the game tied 2-2 in the first three minutes of overtime, Mount Saint Vincent's Jair Magallan scored the game-winning goal against Sage in a Skyline match-up Saturday afternoon.
Sage (4-7-3, 2-5-1 Skyline) got the ball rolling early when River Seybolt (Selden, NY/Longwood) scored in the first 31 seconds after an Alex Lanza (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) throw-in into the Dolphin box was mis-cleared to Seybolt for the volley. Less than three minutes later, Mount Saint Vincent's (6-8-1, 5-3 Skyline) Silva Rodrigo crossed the ball across to Andrew Gomez in the six yard box. Gomez tapped the cross in to tie the game 1-1.
The game was tied for a little over two minutes until Ryan Fairweather (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) scored off a Paul Reynoso (Oswego, NY/G. Ray Bodley) free kick on the left side of the penalty box.
Mount Saint Vincent outshot Sage 3-2 over the next 22 minutes, until a straight red card found the Dolphins playing down a man for the last 17 minutes of the half.
Sage came out in the second half with a shot from Lanza in the 46th minute that was saved by David Melchor. Mount Saint Vincent found themselves in a bind when a second yellow card in the 51st minute lost them a second field player. The Gators immediately responded with a header from Anthony Williamson (Beacon, NY/Beacon), but it went wide to the right.
After 28 minutes of play, Mount Saint Vincent's Tim Guido sent a long ball into the Gator penalty box. Gomez was there and headed it just out of the outstretched arm of Sage goalie Mike Chiaravalloti (Torrington, CT/OlderWolcott) to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime.
Sage controlled play to start the second half. However, a misplay from the defense at midfield led to a Magallan breakaway. The forward took a shot from the corner of the Gator penalty box and scored the game-winner.
Melchor (4-6) was credited with the win on seven save effort while Chiaravalloti (2-1) picked up the loss with one save. Gomez had a game-high five shots, and Sage was led by Seybolt with four.
Sage is set to play U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Tues. Oct., 18 at the ACP Athletic Complex at 7 p.m.
