Sage falls from Skyline Conference Quarterfinals, 3-1

Westbury, NY---- The Sage Colleges women's volleyball team traveled to SUNY Old Westbury for the quarterfinals of the 2010 Skyline Conference Championships. Third seeded SUNY-Old Westbury ended sixth seeded Sage's hopes for a conference championship and the league's automatic bid to the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships. Old-Westbury tallied the 3-1 win (25-17, 15-25, 25-20, 25-7) to improve to 24-10, setting a school record for most victories in a season along the way and advanced to the semifinals. Sage's season comes to an end with a 7-23 mark.

The contest marked the end of the collegiate careers for three Sage Gators, seniors Michelle DeNisco (New Hampton, NY/New Hampton), Cheryce Harvey (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor), and Nicole Corbett (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia). This talented trio helped the program to four straight Skyline Conference Tournament appearances during their time in Gator uniforms, while helping the program to two NCAA Tournament appearances (2007 and 2008), two Skyline Conference Championships (2007 and 2008) and the league's runner-up title in 2009.

Against the Panthers, Corbett connected for eight kills with two blocks in the match. DeNisco added six kills with four blocks, while Harvey had 18 digs with three kills and three blocks for the Gators. Sage's rookie Gina Cerutti (Scotia, NY/ Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) had five kills and 14 digs, while junior Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) racked up 15 digs. Rookie setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) had nine digs with 23 setting assists in the quarterfinals for the Gators.

Corbett, who is a candidate for the 2010 CoSIDA Academic All-America Team for her accomplishments both on the court and in the classroom, wraps her career as a program record holder and three-time Skyline Conference All-Star First Team honoree. She set the Sage career total block mark earlier this season and finishes with 449 and a team-leading 71 this season. Her 2010 single-season total stands 10th best at Sage in a single season. Corbett also led Sage as well with her 226 kills and has elevated her career totals to include 1,131 kills, which is fourth on the career list.

DeNisco finished the season with 127 kills which was third best on the team in the stat category. She added contributed 29 service aces, with 51 digs, and 38 blocks. In her two seasons with Sage, she has 239 kills, 64 service aces, 117 digs and 86 total blocks in 217 games played through 66 matches.

Harvey was another of the Gators' everyday starters this fall after earning that role as a junior. A four-year letterwinner, she played in 271 sets in 88 matches. She racked up 154 kills with 601 digs, 54 service aces and 51 blocks. On the 2010 campaign, she tallied 85 kills and 260 digs.

Sage's rookie Gina Cerutti (Scotia, NY/ Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) had five kills and 14 digs, while junior Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) racked up 15 digs. Rookie setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa)

Wilson finishes her junior campaign ranked No. 5 on the career dig list with 1,179. She moved ahead of Kristiana Leniart (1998-2001) who had 1,168 digs.

Cooney finishes her first collegiate season as the team's setting assist leader as she handed out 559 for the 2010 campaign. She ranks seventh on the career assist list, while ranking 10th in single-season performances as a Gator.
