Schenectady, NY---- The Sage Colleges women's volleyball team travelled to nearby Union
College to compete in the Union College Invitational. Sage faced the hosts, Union College
in the first match and dropped a 3-0 decision to the Dutchwomen (25-20, 25-18, 25-11).
Union improved to 4-4 on the year. The Gators then faced Hartwick College and dropped
a 3-1 decision in the night cap. (25-14, 25-8, 17-25, 27-25). Sage drops to 0-10, while
Hartwick is 3-7.
Against Union, the Dutchwomen took the first game 25-20 followed by the second, 25-18.
They opened the third game with a 6-0 run which paced Union for a 25-11 win to take
the match. In the final game freshman Rebecca Knepple had two big kills down each line back-to-back to give Union the 8-4 advantage. Classmate Casey Tepper later killed a ball to the back line to put her team up 14-7. Kim Armstrong got into the action with an ace to put Union up 19-8.
For the Sage Gators against Union, rookie setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/ Shenendehowa) added 19 assists with eight digs. Senior middle hitter middle hitter Nicole Corbett (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) tallied nine kills with four blocks.
Senior Cheryce Harvey (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) added six kills with eight digs and senior middle hitter Michelle DeNisco (New Hampton, NY/Goshen) added five kills.
Against Hartwick, Sage trailed two sets and rebounded with a third set win (25-17) and
dropped a 27-25 decision in the fourth set. Cooney led the way with her career-high 28
assists and a chipped in for six digs. Junior outside hitter Jennifer Ahearn (Cohoes, NY/ Cohoes) added nine kills for Sage. Corbett added nine kills with three blocks, putting her at 397 career blocks, just 41 shy of tying Sage's career record for blocks (438). Harvey added a double-double as she had a team-high 10 kills with 15 digs and junior Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons) added 20 digs with a
pair of aces.
The Gators will be in action on Saturday, September 18 at the Union College Tournament. Sage will face Elms College at 10:00 a.m. and Skidmore College at 2 p.m. to wrap play in the tournament.
