Corbett breaks career block mark, but Gators fall twice

Albany, NY---- The Sage Colleges women's volleyball team hosted a quad match on Saturday featuring Skidmore College. SUNY-Potsdam, and William Paterson University. Skidmore went 2-0 on the day as they beat Sage (3-0, 25-12, 25-21, 25-23) and SUNY-Potsdam (3-1, 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 25-14). William Paterson went 2-0 with a 3-2 win over SUNY-Potsdam (19-25, 25-23, 25-17, 19-25, 15-9) and a 3-1 win over Sage (21-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-21).

Skidmore improves to 17-4 overall, while William Paterson is 15-5. Potsdam drops to 6-19 and Sage is now 4-19.

Sage's senior middle hitter Nicole Corbett (Greenbush, NY/Columbia) became the program's all-time career block leader on the afternoon after combining to rack up 13 blocks on the day. She moved into the top spot in the record book as she now has 440 career blocks and took the record away from Alison Archambault (2000-2003, 438).

Against Skidmore, Sage was led by senior Cheryce Harvey (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor) as she had six kills with eight digs. Corbett added four kills with eight total blocks including six solo blocks.

Junior Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) tallied 17 digs in the match for the Gators. Freshman setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) connected for 17 setting assists with 12 digs.

Against William Paterson, the Gators got another 42 setting assists from Cooney with nine digs, giving her 59 assists on the day.

Wilson connected for 17 digs while Harvey had 16 digs with seven kills. Senior Michelle DeNisco (New Hampton, NY/Goshen) tallied 11 kills with two digs and two blocks.

The Gators will be in action on Tuesday, October 19 for their annual Crankin for a Cure Match which will be hosted by Union College at 7 p.m. The contest is a breast cancer fund raiser and fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match. -30-
