Gators Open Skyline Play with a convincing win at OW

Old Westbury, NY – The Sage Colleges' women's volleyball team travelled to SUNY-Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon for the team's 2013 Skyline Conference opener. Picked first in the race for the league's title by the coaches in the pre-season poll, Sage delivered a convincing 3-0 win over the Panthers, (25-15, 25-12, 25-19). Sage is now 6-13 overall and 1-0 in the Skyline Conference, while Old Westbury drops to 2-8 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Sage's junior outside hitter Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) added a double-double with her 17 kills and 14 digs, while junior outside hitter Jillian Schwab (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) added nine kills in the contest.

Senior setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) handed out 32 setting assists with six digs, while junior defensive specialist Katelyn Drollette (Cadyville, NY/Saranac) had 15 digs.

Newcomer Michayla Berard (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) added six kills as the Gators won their second straight match.

Putriment wraps the week with her career resume elevated to 1,110 career digs (No. 10) at Sage as she moved ahead of Sarah Busch (2001-2004 with 1,106). She now has 866 career kills, which is No. 6 as well at Sage. Cooney now has 2,812 career setting assists which is No. 2 at Sage. Drollette added her 881st career dig this afternoon, moving her into the No. 14 position on the career list.

Sage returns to action on October 4 travelling to Baruch College for an 8 p.m. non-conference match.
