A three-year letterwinner at Sage, Joanie Cooney has already established herself on the court for the Gators. She is serving as a team captain for the third time this fall.

In her first campaign with the Gators, she added 59 kills and 206 digs 32 aces in 2010 while playing in 99 sets in 30 matches. She tallied 559 setting assists as well as a rookie.

As a sophomore setter she continued to dominate the setting assist statistic in 2011 after she led both Sage and the Skyline Conference with her 892 assists, while her per game average of 7.50 ranks third in the league.

She capped her sophomore season by earning the Coaches' Award after also serving as a team captain. As a rookie, she was named the team's Rookie of the Year after also earning weekly honors as the league's rookie of the week and several player of the week honor roll citations.

Last fall she wrapped her junior season as a team co-captain and led the Gators to an 8-1 finish in the Skyline Conference and a spot in the 2012 ECAC Upstate Tournament. She was named to the 2012 Skyline All-Conference First Team after for the first time in her career. Overall on the 2012 season, she started every match and had 75 kills with 308 digs.  She led the team with her 952 setting assists, which is a personal-best for the junior. Overall on her career, her resume includes 208 kills, 780 digs, 103 aces and 2,403 setting assists.  A team co-captain this fall, she is second on Sage's career setting assist list with her numbers, while her 7.24 assists per game average in No. 3 on the career list. She caps a strong season after also earning acclaim with a selection to the All-Tournament Team at both the Elms Invitational and the Ithaca College Invitational. She was also named the MVP of the tournament at Elms College after helping the Gators to the championship title. She was named the Skyline Conference Player of the Week once during the season, while also earned a spot on the weekly honor roll once as well.

A volleyball team captain at Shenendehowa, she was the squad's MVP after also earning back-to-back All-Tournament Team Honors. The recipient of the Shenendehowa Physical Education Award, she was a National Honor Society Student and earned her Advanced Regents Diploma.

At Sage, she is also involved with SAAC and is a Sage Scholar-Athlete Honoree. She is active as a tutor for the Peer Tutoring club. A Dean's List Student, she is a psychology pre-med major. She was named to the 2012 Skyline Conference Scholar-Athlete Team as well as the Sage Scholar-Athlete Team as well for her academic successes. She will once again be a candidate for the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Team this season.

She is the daughter of Daniel Cooney, a former lacrosse player for St. John's University and Adele Cooney, a former All-American in volleyball at St. Thomas Aquinas College.
