SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Russell Sage College capped its fall by dropping a pair of matches this afternoon at the Skidmore Invitational.
The Gators opened their day by falling to the host Thoroughbreds 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 26-24).
Middle hitter Celia Gagnon (Troy, NY/Ichabod Crane), a graduate student, and junior outside hitter Caitlin Hammecker (Warnerville, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) topped RSC with six kills apiece in the setback.
Senior defensive specialist Elaina Moisidis (Albany, NY/Albany), who ended the afternoon as the Empire 8 Conference leader in digs, 546, and digs per-set, 5.20, led all participants with 16 digs, while junior setter Statia Walker (Schodack, NY/Maple Hill), who dished out the 1,000th assist of her career earlier this fall, passed out 15 assists.
Skidmore (9-15), celebrating its "Senior Weekend", hit .299 as a team in the sweep. Some of the six seniors that were recognized earlier today keyed the home win. Senior outside hitter Chelsea Winegar totaled 15 kills on .290 hitting. Senior setter Audrey Powell registered 22 assists, while senior libero Elizabeth Miller elevated 12 Gator attacks.
RSC (4-25) wrapped up its campaign with a 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 21-25) setback at the hands of Union.
Gagnon, who closed the fall ranked second in the E8 with 363.5 points and 292 kills, finished off 12 rallies, while senior outside hitter Sydney Shepard (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie) added 11 kills. Walker recorded 23 assists and 19 digs for her 14th double-double of the fall, while Moisidis, who served up four aces, elevated 24 Dutchwomen attacks.
Union (12-14) had three players register eight or more kills in the victory. Senior setter Haley Kresch, who distributed the 1,000th assist of her career earlier in the Invitational, accomplished a double-double of 23 assists and 19 digs. She was one of four Dutchwomen to reach double-digit digs in the win.
Notes: The program achieved many career milestones achieved this fall...Head coach Sandy Augstein-Collins, now in her 13th season coaching at RSC and 26th overall, picked up her 375th career victory on September 14 vs. SUNY Cobleskill…Moisidis, who also topped the Empire 8 Conference with 492 digs and 4.82 per-set last fall, became the 15th RSC player to surpass 1,000 career digs on September 10 at the SUNY New Paltz Tournament…She closed the Tournament sixth in program records with 1,415 career digs…Walker dished out the 1,000th assist of her career on September 30 at St. John Fisher…She ended the contests sixth in school annals with 1,283 career assists…The setter tallied 14 double-doubles this season…Gagnon surpassed 500 career kills on October 14 vs. Elmira…She ended the weekend 14th in program records with 583 career kills...The grad student finished her fall second in the E8 with 365.5 points.
