RSC Student Looking to Qualify for 2023 World University Games in Lake Placid

RSC Student Looking to Qualify for 2023 World University Games in Lake Placid

Albany, NY—Russell Sage College freshman Noah Kenyon (Glenville, NY/Niskayuna) is looking to earn a spot on the U.S. Biathlon Team and compete in the upcoming 2023 World University Games in Lake Placid, NY in January.

Kenyon just finished his first semester at RSC and is majoring in health sciences. Away from the classroom, Kenyon has garnered considerable success as a biathlete. He has combined his skills and love of the outdoors in the winter, having won three straight New York State Championships in the sport. A biathlete combined two disciplines, cross country skiing and target rife shooting. Competitions require both technique and stamina as they cross country ski for up to 20 kilometers or 12 miles. They must also be able to lower their heart rate enough to hold the gun steady as they aim at a tiny target, with the threat of having to ski an extra distance or time penalties if they miss.

Training for the sport is a year-round undertaking, something Kenyon has been working at since age 11. With the 2023 World University Games slated for January 12-22 in Lake Placid, Kenyon is looking to not only qualify in the event, but leave his mark on the sport. He will be heading to Anchorage, Alaska to compete in the Youth and Junior World Championship Trials, December 28-31, 2022 to earn a spot as a member of Team USA.

Meet Noah

I am an 18-year-old student athlete who currently lives in Glenville, NY and recently graduated from Niskayuna High School. This fall I began attending Russell Sage College seeking my bachelor's degree in Health Science with hopes of also pursuing a Doctorate in Physical Therapy.

This year I will be attempting to qualify for a spot in the World University Games in Lake Placid, NY along with the Youth World Championships in Kazakhstan. In December I will be in Anchorage, Alaska for two weeks training and competing at the trials for both of these events. I also expect to compete in the USA National Championships in Casper, Wyoming and multiple regional events in the East.

My Story

At age 11, all I wanted to do was play baseball! I had no idea that would soon change. After watching the Summer Olympics with my family, we headed to Lake Placid NY. As many know Lake Placid hosted the 1980 and 1932 winter Olympics, it's also where my father trained in his attempt to make the 1998 US Olympic Team as a speed skater.

After going down the bobsled run and checking out the top of the ski jumps, we headed to the biathlon experience. I got my first taste of the sport and fell in love, even though I had never skied a day in my life. Now what? We got lucky and found the Saratoga Biathlon Club about an hour away from home. We met Curt Schreiner, a former olympic biathlete who, with his family, runs the club. They love the sport and built cross country ski trails along with a biathlon shooting range at their family home. They continue to maintain the facility for club members to use year-round. Curt and the other club members have helped to teach me the sport and offered so much support along the way.

Although Covid-19 caused the cancellation of many races over the last couple years, I have continued my training through the Saratoga Biathlon Club and Lake Placid Club. As a result of my dedication and hard work, I now compete on a national level with the long-term goal of making the USA Olympic and World Cup teams that race in Europe. Now under the direction of my coach and trainer, Andrea Henkle-Burke, a former Olympic medalist and World Champion from Germany, I know it can happen.
