ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College men's soccer team hosted SUNY-Canton on Tuesday night on a non-conference match. The Gators collected the 3-0 win to move to 3-2-1 on the year, while SUNY-Canton drops to 2-5.
Junior forward El Hadji Iba Sy (Bronx, NY/Emma Lazarus) connected for two goals in the first half to elevate his season total to five goals. The first goal came at the 2:27 mark on a pass from senior Midfielder/forward Christian Vålstuen (Lillestrom, Norway/Lambertseter Athletic) to give the Gators an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore midfielder/forward Joe Piperata (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) scored on a break-away at 17:30, before Iba Sy added his second goal of the half off a corner pass from the left side on a feed from sophomore defender Mason Kievit (Pleasant Valley, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes).
Leading 3-0 at the break, RSC tallied the shutout win, their second straight on the season.
In goal for RSC sophomore goalie Jordan Prouty (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) made five saves in earning the victory in his first game of the season and collected the shutout. SUNY-Canton's junior goalie Owen Kwong (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) picked up nine saves with three goals allowed and drops to 2-3.
Vålstuen now has 26 career points and ranks 10th all-time in career points, while his 9 career goals stands ninth best. His 8 career assists is also among the Top 10 all-time as he is ninth.
The Gators return to action on September 24 travelling to Elmira College for a 4 p.m. Empire 8 match-up.
