NEW YORK – After a perfect 8-0 week, junior Katy Rimawi (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) and graduate student Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) were named the week six Skyline Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
Rimawi batted an impressive .519 with 14 hits, 12 runs, 10 RBI's, three homers and two doubles. At the beginning of the week, the junior scored the tying run in the bottom of the ninth against MCLA. The Gators held on to win 3-2 in two extra innings. In a doubleheader with Mount Saint Mary, Rimawi hit a leadoff home run to tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth in game one that the Gators went on to win 5-2. The junior also scored the tying run in game two with the Knights when Alexa Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) went yard over the left field fence and drove in three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sage went on to win to win 6-5 and completed the sweep. Rimawi currently leads the Gators in runs this season with 30, second in the Skyline.
On the mound, Kovage went 4-0 on the week with a 0.44 ERA and a .195 opponent batting average. The graduate student recorded 15 strikeouts over 20.2 innings of work. Her season 1.82 ERA ranks second in the Skyline. Kovage was one hit away from tossing a no-hitter against SUNY-Cobleskill, and she pitched shutouts against SUNY-Old Westbury and MCLA.
Kovage also had a monster day at the plate batting .368 with seven hits, seven RBI's, five runs, three doubles and one home run. In game one with Mount Saint Mary, Kovage hit a three-run homer over the center field fence to put Sage up 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth.
Sage currently tops the Skyline with an 11-1 conference record. The Gators have clinched their spot in the Skyline Championship along with Mount Saint Mary (14-2), Mount Saint Vincent (13-3), Farmingdale State (12-4) and St. Joseph's-Long Island (9-5). The sixth and final spot is being fought for by Purchase (5-9), SUNY-Old Westbury (4-12) and St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (4-12). The top two teams will earn first round byes with the remaining teams playing on Apr. 27.
The Gators continue Skyline action play this afternoon in a doubleheader featuring Yeshiva at 3:30 p.m. at Robison Field.
