Gators open track season at Wesleyan Spring Invitational

Middletown, CT –The Sagemen's outdoor track and field team opened the new season on Saturday competing at the Wesleyan University Spring Invitational. A non-team scored meet, Sage's men's teams had a number of impressive showings in the first meet of the season.

Sage's men's team was paced by the efforts of junior Anthony Williamson (Beacon, NY/Beacon) as he was 11th in the 100 meter dash in 11.65 and 17th in the 200 meter run in 24.15. Rookie Deion Thomas (New York, NY/Democracy Prep) added a 38th place finish in 12.86, while sophomore Daesean Clay (Danbury, CT/Danbury) was next in 39th in 12.89. Rounding out the Gators in the same race were sophomore Zaheer Ahmad (Queens, NY/Academy of the Innovative Technology) in 40th (12.96) and rookie Malik McNeish (Bronx, NY/The Eagle Academy for Young Men) in 43rd (13.71) and rookie Markenzi Sainvilus (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) in 44th (15.25).

Also running in the 200 meter run from Sage were Clay and McNeish as they picked up 36th and 40th in 26.30 and 27.96, respectively.

In the 800 meter race, rookie Zachary Funk (Gloversville, NY/Gloversville) was 17th in 2:10.84. Also running in the race was junior Ian Alejandro (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) as he finished in 25th in 2:23.00. Alejandro added a 30th place finish in the 1,500 meter run in 5:01.06.

In the 3,000 meter run, senior Juan Reyes-Alvarez (Latham, NY/Shaker) took 28th in 10:46.16.

Sage got an 8th place showing in the men's 4 x 100 relay as they combined for a time of 49.27 behind the work of Clay, McNeish, Ahmad and Williamson.

In the shot put, rookie Benjamin Hulett (Shaftbury, VT/Mt. Anthony Union) picked up 25th with his mark of 9.19 meters, while Thomas picked up 28th with a toss of 8.58 meters. Sainvilus added a 32nd place finish in the shot with his toss of 7.19 meters.

In the discus, Hulett was the top Sage finisher in 17th place with his throw of 28.72 meters, while Thomas added a throw of 22.83 meters to take 22nd. Sainvilus was next in 28th with a throw of 19.03 meters.  Hulett wrapped his first meet with a 21nd place showing in the javelin with his throw of 32.83 meters. Sainvilus was next in 28th in the javelin with a throw of 16.50 meters.

Next up for the Gators is a competition on April 2 at Ramapo College as they travel to Mahwah, NJ to compete in the Roadrunner Invitational.
