Strong showing for Sage volleyball; Gators wrap play at Union Tournament

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -   The Sage Colleges' women's volleyball team wrapped competition on Saturday at the Union College Invitational. In the first match of the day, Skidmore College posted a 3-0 win over Sage (25-17, 25-13, and 25-12. In the final match of the tournament, Sage posted a 3-0 win over Brockport State, 25-23, 25-11, 25-12). The Gators stand at 10-2 on the season after a 2-2 performance at the tournament.

Against Skidmore, which also went 2-2 at the tournament, the Thoroughbreds were came away with the win. The first set was an equal fight, both teams playing strong defense and both liberos digging hard.  Sam Friedman, the libero for Skidmore, had an even twenty digs and two assists in her team's victory today.  Sage libero, sophomore Katelyn Drollette (Cadyville, NY/Saranac) recorded thirteen digs. Skidmore's seven-point run was answered by Sage's five-point run and the two went back and forth in a heated set that ended with Skidmore pulling away. 

In the second set, the Thoroughbreds were in control and dominated leaving Sage rattled for the third and final set.  Skidmore started at a breakneck pace to open a 10-1 lead.  Going on an eight-point and later a six-point run, the Thoroughbreds took the final set with ease. Mallory Mendelsohn marked thirty assists and Corinne Palmer scored twelve kills and one block for Skidmore victory.

Against Brockport State, the Gators were able to sweep the Golden Eagles in straight sets for the team's 10th win of the year.  The first set remained close for its duration as Sage was able to squeak out a 25-23 win.

Sage pulled away early with great teamwork, making it a quick match in the second set 25-14. Going into the third match, Brockport came out fighting and had the lead momentarily. However, Sage ended up picking up the needed momentum to come from behind to take the final set 25-18.

For the team, sophomore Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill Richmondville) lead Sage with 11 kills, while junior setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) paced the Gators with 30 assists. Rookie Kelsey Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads)was also key to the Gator offense with 10 kills. 

Sage returns to action on Tuesday, September 18 travelling to MCLA for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
