Gators tally win over MCLA in women's tennis action

Troy, NY– The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team hosted the Trailblazers of MCLA on Friday afternoon in a non-conference match held at Prospect Park. The Gators tallied a 6-3 win to improve to 7-4 overall, while MCLA falls to 3-9.

Sage took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches. Sage's top two doubles pairs were victorious as senior captain Mackenzie Riley (Albany, NY/Albany) and senior Isabella Pericone (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) were 8-0 winners over MCLA's senior Laura Laureano (South Lawrence, MA/Lawrence) and sophomore Sarah Murphy (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane). The Gator pair stands at 7-4 with one another. Sophomore Kirsten Ackerman (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) and her partner, junior Mary Kate Hayward (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) beat sophomore Megan Holmes (West Camp, NY/Saugerties) and freshman Danielle Wiencek (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley), 8-0.

MCLA's tandem of rookies Stephanie Giardina (Pittsfield, MA/Taconic) and Sarah Cowdell (Lynn, MA/Lynn English) bested Sage's junior Dana Fowler (Troy, NY/Troy) and freshman Julia Race (Adams, NY/South Jefferson), 8-1.

In singles play Sage posted wins at first through fourth in the ladder as Ackerman was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Murphy and improves to 11-1 this fall. Riley added a 6-1, 6-1 win at second singles as she beat Holmes and improves to 10-3 this fall. Pericone added a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles as she beat Laureano and remains unbeaten this fall at 11-0.

Giardina and Cowdell were winners at 5 and 6 singles to help the Trailblazers on the afternoon.

The Gators will play their next match on October 13 when they host NYU-Poly in a Skyline Conference match to be held at Prospect Park (Troy, NY) in a 1 p.m. start.
