Albany, NY– The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team hosted the Rams of Farmingdale State College on Saturday in a key Skyline Conference match as both teams came into the action with a 1-0 mark in league action. The Rams tallied a 5-4 win to improve to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the league, while Sage stands at 6-3 overall and 1-1 in the Skyline Conference.
The Rams took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches. Sage's lone doubles win came at No. 2 doubles as sophomore Kirsten Ackerman (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) and her partner, senior Christina Kroder (Catskill, NY/Catskill) beat freshman Denise Liguori (East Northport, NY/Massapequa) and senior Laura Earlie (Moriches, NY/William Floyd), 8-0.
In singles play, Ackerman was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at first singles as she beat sophomore Jessica Sickles (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa). The win puts Ackerman at 9-1 overall on the season in singles play.
FSC's sophomore Alex Bentz (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Sage's senior captain Mackenzie Riley (Albany, NY/Albany). The loss was the first singles dual match loss on the fall.
Sage's senior Isabella Pericone (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) and junior Mary Kate Hayward (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) were both victorious in singles play as well for Sage. Pericone improves to 9-0 in singles play this season, while Hayward is now 3-6.
The Gators will play their next match on October 1 when they travel to Purchase College for a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference match.
