Troy, NY– The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team hosted the Badgers of Johnson State College on Saturday afternoon in the team's season opener. The Gators responded with a 6-3 victory and stand at 1-0 on the young season, while JSC drops to 0-2.
Sage's senior captain Mackenzie Riley (Albany, NY/Albany) picked up a pair of wins on opening day as she
Defeated freshman Deanna Brandsetter (Newport, VT/North Country), 6-3, 7-5. Riley teamed at first doubles with senior Isabella Perricone (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) for an 8-2 win over the Badgers' tandem of senior Emily Miller (Tucson, AZ/Ironwood Ridge) and rookie Annette Kaminski (Southington, CT/Southington).
Riley, who was elected team captain this week returns this season after competing in just one match a year ago after falling from the lineup with an illness. Riley has now won eight straight singles matches dating back to the fall of 2010 and sports an 11-1 career singles record at Sage.
Making her debut in the lineup for the Gators at No. 1 singles was sophomore Kirsten Ackerman (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) as she posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory over JSC's Miller. Ackerman teamed at No. 2 doubles with Christina Kroder (Catskill, NY/Catskill) for an 8-2 win as well.
JSC's sophomore Alyssa Greene (Rumford, ME/Mountain Valley) was a winner at No. 4 singles, besting Sage's junior Mary Kate Hayward (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls), 6-4, 6-0. Teammate sophomore Chelsea Vallone-Curtis (St. Albans, VT/BFA-St. Albans) added a win at No. 6 singles for the Badger with her 6-4, 6-1 win.
Sage returns to action on Sunday, September 2 hosting Bay Path College at Prospect Park at 1 p.m.
