Gators back on winning track with victory over Castleton

Rutland, VT– The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team travelled to Castleton State for a non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon. After fall twice last week, Sage rebounded with a 5-4 win over the Castleton to improve to 6-2 this fall. Castleton drops to 4-4.

The Gators took first through third singles as sophomore Kirsten Ackerman (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) defeated Olga McIntyrne, 6-1, 6-1. Ackerman remains unbeaten on the year in singles this fall as a Gator and is now 7-0, while riding an 11-match singles' win streak dating back to last season.

Sage's senior captain Mackenzie Riley (Albany, NY/Albany) picked up a sweep over Felicia West as she posted a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles. With her victory on Wednesday, Riley stands at 8-0 this season and has elevated her personal win streak to 15 straight matches. Her streak dates back to October of 2010. She is now 18-1 in singles on her Sage career.

Senior Isabella Pericone (Scotia, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) collected the Gators' lone other win in singles as she beat Lauren Fedorka, 6-1, 6-1. Pericone improves to 8-0 on the fall in singles play for Sage.

In doubles, Sage's Riley and Pericone combined for an 8-2 win over West and McIntyre and are now 6-2 with one another. Ackerman teamed at No. 2 doubles with junior Mary Kate Hayward (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) for an 8-5 win. The Gator pair is now 3-1 with one another.

Next up for two members of the Sage team is completion at the 2012 ITA Northeast Regional Singles and Doubles Tournament at William Smith College, September 22-24. Riley and Ackerman will compete in the impressive tournament as they try to make a run for ITA All-American honors through the venue in both singles and doubles competition, with hopes of advancing to the ITA Nationals in mid-October.

The Gators will play their next match on September 26 when they travel to Purchase College for a 7 p.m. Skyline Conference match.
