Gators drop heartbreaker in ECAC men's soccer quarterfinals to RUC, 2-1

Camden, NJ – The Scarlet Raptors of Rutgers University-Camden posted a 2-1 win over The Sage Colleges' in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Easter College Athletic Conference Metro Division III Men's Soccer Tournament on Wednesday night. Seeded No. 1, RUC improves to 14-8-1, while the Gators cap their 2014 season with a 9-8-1 mark.

Rutgers-Camden led 1-0 after Mike at the half as Mike Ryan scored at 14:49, connecting for his 15th goal of the year.  At 38:01, Giuseppe DeLuca converted the penalty kick giving his squad a 2-0 lead at the break.

Freshman midfielder Heriberto Gomez (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) pulled the Gators within one score with his goal at 88:20 on a pass from senior Gustavo Trinidad (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck) before time expired.

Trinidad caps his senior season with a team-best 10 assists and closes his stellar career as the program's first three-time Skyline Conference First Team All-Star, while tallying a school-record 82 points on 25 goals and 32 assists. He finishes his career with 25 goals (No. 2 all-time), while handing out a career record 32 assists. Over the course of his career, he had another program high-water mark for most game-winning goals (11).

Among the Gators other seniors capping their stellar career in the ECAC contest were defender Tyler Denton (Sauquoit, NY/Saquoit Valley) and Jose Miranda (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore). Denton finishes his career with 26 points, which is No. 5 on the career list having tallied 9 goals with 8 assists. He played in 70 career games as a Gator. Miranda finishes his career third all-time in career scoring on 47 points (16g, 15 assists), while appearing in with 69 games at Sage.  

Sage's junior T.J. Zehner (Beacon, NY/Beacon) made three saves in the contest, but took the loss. He drops to 9-8-1 on the year. A first-team Skyline Conference pick, Zehner continues to add to his extensive list of records as the Gators' keeper. He has active records for most saves (171) as well as most appearances in goal (43) and most career starts in goal (43).

For Sage, the 2014 ECAC appearance was the fourth in program history. The Gators won the 2012 ECAC Division III Upstate Championship, while last year's team advanced to the semifinals of the Metro Tournament.
