Gators fall to Utica on opening night

Utica, NY – The Pioneers of Utica College hosted Sage in a men's soccer match-up on Friday night and were paced by the play of senior Shane Ruffing (Rochester, NY) as he poured in three goals to lift his team to the opening night win. Utica led 3-0 at the half and went on to win by the final score of 3-0 to improve to 1-0 on the young season, while Sage drops to 0-1.

Ruffing and rookie Bita Gazashvili (Tiblisi, Georgia) connected three times in the action for the Pioneers.

Sage's junior goalie TJ Zehner (Beacon, NY/Beacon), took the loss after making five saves. For Utica, senior keeper David Abdou (Whitesboro, NY) earned the win with his work to collect the shutout.

Sage's home opener in on September 2, when Bard College visits at 8:15 p.m. at the Plumeri Sports Complex in Albany. The 2014 campaign marks the fifth season for men's soccer at Sage and the team is under the direction of Kyle Clancy.
