Softball team drops two games on Tuesday

Kissimmee, FL – The Sage Colleges' softball team continued action on Tuesday on the team's Spring Training Trip. The Gators fell to Millikin University in the first game of the day, 10-2 in six innings. In the nightcap, the Gators dropped a tough 12-7 decision to the Foresters of Lake Forest College.  Sage is 1-5 on the year.

After the day got off to a later start due to morning rains in the area, Sage faced unbeaten Millikin University.

The Big Blue of Millikin (5-0) broke open a 2-2 game with an eight run bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Tess Strang drove home the go ahead run with a base hit.  Freshman Alyssa Visvardis ended the scoring in the inning and the game with a three-run walk off home run.  Janet Ellis was 3-3 at the plate for the Big Blue.

Lauren Kitterman was the winning pitcher for Millikin, improving to 3-0 on the season.

For the Gators, graduate performer Rachel Smith (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) suffered the loss and is now 1-2 on the year.

Against Lake Forest, the Gators fell 12-7 despite a seven run fifth inning. Lake Forest jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning and tacked on a run in the top of the second and third inning. The Foresters added four runs in the top of the fourth inning before the Gator bats came alive with a seven-run effort in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull within striking distance, down 11-7.

Junior Hillary Faas (EAST Greenbush, NY/Columbia) and rookie Lauren Cooney (Wyantskill, NY/Troy) each added a double and an RBI for the Gators, while sophomore Karlie Williams (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) was 2-4 with an RBI.

Senior pitcher, Kelsey Newberg (New Britain, CT/New Britain), who earned a spot on the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, suffered the loss with 11 earned runs off 17 hits. She walked four and struck out four and drops to 0-3 on the season.

The Gators are back in action on Thursday, March 14 facing the #2 ranked Red Hawks of Montclair State University at 11 a.m. and Transylvania University at 1 p.m.
