Gators fall twice on day two of Florida trip, including a heartbreaker in extra-innings

 Kissimmee, FL ---The Sage Colleges' softball team continued action on Monday on the team's Spring Training Trip. The Gators fell to Wheaton College (MA), 1-0 in eight innings. In the nightcap, the Gators fell, 10-0 in five innings to Washington College (MD). Sage is 1-3 on the year.

Against Wheaton, the Lyons came up victorious in the bottom of the eighth inning to connect for the lone run of the game. Starting the extra-inning play with a runner on second base, the Gators had two outs before a throwing error allowed the Wheaton runner to come home and end the game.

Taking the loss for Sage was graduate performer Rachel Smith (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) after scattering seven hits with no earned runs in 7.2 innings of work. She fanned two with a walk in falling to 1-1 on the year.

Against Washington College (MD), the Gators suffered a 10-0 loss in five innings and scattered five hits in the action.  

Senior pitcher, Kelsey Newberg (New Britain, CT/New Britain), who earned a spot on the Skyline Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Monday, worked 2.2 innings with three earned runs with four walks. Newberg drops to 0-2 on the season. Freshman Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) worked 2.1 innings in relief with one earned run in the time in the circle.

The Gators are back in action on Tuesday, March 12 facing Millikin University at 1 p.m. and Lake Forest College at 5 p.m.
