FSC tallies opening win over Sage in Skyline Softball Tournament

Purchase, NY – The Sage Colleges' softball team opened action in the 2013 Skyline Conference Softball Championship on Friday on the campus of Purchase College. Seeded No. 3, Sage faced second seeded Farmingdale State College in the first game, but fell 8-0 in five innings. Sage drops to the losers' bracket and will face No. 1 seeded NYU-Poly, which also lost on Friday. The two teams will meet in an elimination game at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the four-team double-elimination formatted tournament.

Sage stands at 19-17 overall, while FSC improves to 21-14.

Sage's senior pitcher Kelsey Newberg (New Britain, CT/New Britain) took the loss to fall to 8-8 on the season. She started and gave up three earned runs off six hits with one strikeout in 3.1 innings of work. She was replaced by rookie pitcher Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central), who worked 2.2 innings in relief with one earned run off a pair of hits.  

The Gators got a double from graduate performer and outfielder, Tiffany Bezio (Whitehall, NY/Whitehall), while sophomores Karlie Williams (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) and Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport) each were 2-3 at the plate, while Kovage added a 2-3 effort as well as the Gators stranded eight runners and could not push them pass the plate.

Game 2 - No. 2 Farmingdale State vs. No. 3 Sage - (FSC won 8-0)

Game 4 - Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2 - (NYU-Poly vs. Sage) 1:00 p.m.
