New York, NY--- With the release of the Skyline Conference’s weekly award winners, The Sage Colleges’ softball team swept the weekly honors after another impressive week’s efforts. Sage stands at 14-4 overall and a perfect 4-0 in the Skyline Conference to lead the league. The Gators are riding a school-record 11 game win streak as well heading into this week’s action.
For Sage’s softball team, which went 6-0 last week, the Gators produced the Co-Player of the Week in rookie infielder Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport), the Pitcher of the Week in junior pitcher Kelsey Newberg (New Britain, CT/New Britain), and the Rookie of the Week in Karlie Williams (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen).
Beikirch repeats as the Player of the Week after earning the same honor last week. Last week, she led Gators to a 6-0 week, as she continued her torrid start. She batted .500, with 11 hits in 22 AB, including 3 HR’s, 2 doubles, and 8 RBIs. She also scored 9 runs, had 4 steals, a 1.000 slugging pct. and is now batting .544 on the season with a team-high 31 hits. This honors is the third for the Gator rookie who was also named the league’s Rookie of the Week on March 12.
Newberg earned Pitcher of the Week for the second straight week after another tremendous week. She went 3-0 for the Gators with a miniscule 0.47 ERA. She added 19 K’s and only 4 walks, with 2 shutouts, including a shared shutout. She held the opposition to a 0.125 batting average last week. In addition to her efforts as a starting pitcher, she also batted .571 on the week with 12 hits, 3 doubles, 5 RBI’s, and 10 runs scored. On the season, Newberg has twice been cited as the Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Week and was also recognized by the ECAC as the Metro Division III Pitcher of the Week.
Overall on the 2012 season, Newberg has a team-best 56 strikeouts this season with a 7-2 record and a 2.09 ERA in 53.2 innings of work. She has 124 career strikeouts and stands third on Sage’s career strikeout, just 24 K’s away from breaking the career record established by Kristin Hazelton (147).
Earning her first citation as the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week, Wiliams was the other cog in stretching Sage’s record winning streak to 11. She hit .500 with 2 doubles, 2 HR’s, 10 RBI’s, and 8 runs scored. She added a .900 slugging percentage on the week. Williams is an 18-game starter with seven doubles and leads the Gators with her 24 RBIs.
Sage returns to action on March 29 when they travel to Green Mountain College for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader. The team will host a pair of Skyline Conference foes with home doubleheaders on Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1 when Mt. St. Mary College and SUNY-Old Westbury visit Robison Field.
