ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College Men's Lacrosse was upended 11-8 by visiting SUNY Brockport in Saturday's "Senior Day" matinee.
Midfielder Anthony Marrone (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township), a grad student, announced as an Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week on Monday, led all participants with five goals and an assist. He finished the day atop the Conference in points, points per-game, goals, and goals per-game.
Goalkeeper Jordon Hankel (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane) continued his strong rookie campaign, stopping 19 Golden Eagle shots. The freshman, who currently leads the E8 in saves and saves per-game, registered 39 saves and a 62.9 save percentage this week.
Junior attacker Mame Diba (New York, NY/Haldane) added a pair of goals, while senior Dean Sampson (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) went 10-of-15 in the X and led all players with six groundballs.
The Gators started their final home game of the spring strong, leading 3-0 just 5:22 in. SUNY Brockport was able to turn the tide, netting seven of the ensuing eight goals.
Down 8-6 entering the fourth period, RSC got within one, 9-8, with 6:04 remaining but was unable to get the equalizer.
SUNY Brockport (7-7/4-3 E8) received four points on three goals and an assist from attacker Carson Colucci, a graduate student.
The Gators (4-11/1-6 E8) conclude the spring with a pair of road games next week, Wednesday at SUNY Poly and Saturday at Nazareth.
Senior Day: Before the contest, Russell Sage College Athletics recognized seven student-athletes: attacker Justin Mayo (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa), midfielder Adam Willig (Buffalo, NY/Amherst Central), midfielder Malachi Gamboa (Bronx, NY/Frederick Douglass Academy), attacker Kollin Matthews (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro), attacker John Hankel (Cold Spring, NY/Haldane/MCLA), attacker Sebastian Carazo (Urbana, MD/McEachern), and defender Joe Johnson (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls), for their contributions to the men's lacrosse program.
Gator Bites with Papa John's: The spring marks the first with Erich Skelly at the helm of the Gators…He arrived at RSC from Albright College in late January…Attacker Bailey Martin (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga Central), a grad student, and Johnson headline the 19 returning Gators…Johnson received an honorable mention for USILA All-American team and earned first-team All-Empire 8 Conference accolades in 2024, program firsts in both awards…Johnson was selected for the USILA Division III Team of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 16…He registered six goals, 19 groundballs and six caused turnovers in a 3-0 week…The senior made the USILA D3 Team of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 13...He totaled nine points on eight goals and one assist, nine groundballs and five caused turnovers across two games...Johnson became the first Gator to caused 100 career turnovers at SUNY Geneseo on April 5...He is guaranteed to finish the campaign occupying the top-three spots on the program's single-season record book for caused turnovers and three of the top-five for groundballs in a single-season…Martin commenced the season as the program's career leader for points (146) and goals (96)… He surpassed both the 150 career points and 100 career goals marks in the victory at Saint Joseph University - Long Island on March 15...Midfielder Anthony Marrone (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township), was announced as the E8 Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 13…The graduate student registered 14 goals on 27 shots across two games… He finished the week leading the Empire 8 Conference in points (57), goals (52), point per-game (3.80) and goals per-game (3.47)…Marrone netted eight goals, the second-most in a game by a Gator, in the E8 victory at Keuka on April 12…He set the program record for goals in a season in the road win…Marrone became just the fifth RSC player to reach 100 career points vs. VTSU: Castleton on March 19… Hankel was selected the Empire 8 Conference Goalkeeper of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 16…The rookie only permitted nine goals and registered a .775 save percentage in a 3-0 week…He tops the E8 with 207 saves, 13.8 per-game...Johnson, Willig, and Marrone were voted co-captains.
