VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Russell Sage College netted 11 of the first 12 goals to conclude its time in Virginia for spring break with a 16-5 victory vs. Greensboro
Midfielder Anthony Marrone (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township), a grad student, led the Gators, which scored twice in the opening 43 seconds, with seven goals. The output is tied for second-most in a game by an RSC player. The co-captain currently tops the Empire 8 Conference with 22 goals on the young season.
Senior defender Joe Johnson (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls), who received an honorable mention for the USILA All-American Team last spring, registered a game-high seven groundballs and two caused turnovers. He scored just five seconds into the neutral-site contest to help the Gators go 2-0 during their time in Virginia.
"This was a great team-bonding trip," said RSC Head Coach Erich Skelly. "The guys did a fantastic job on and off the field of uplifting each other. We have taken steps towards defining what 'Gator Lacrosse' is, but still have a long way to go. The team understands that winning is a product of hard work and preparation and we are excited to continue working hard day in and day out."
Junior attacker Justin Barry and junior midfielder Alex Speckin paced Greensboro (2-6) with a goal and an assist each.
RSC (2-4) now heads back to the Capital Region. The Gators will then prepare for Saturday's non-conference game at Saint Joseph University- Long Island.
Gator Bites with Papa John's: Skelly, in his first season at the helm of the Gators, arrived at RSC from Albright College in late January… Attacker Bailey Martin (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga Central), a grad student, and Johnson headline the 19 returning Gators…Johnson received an honorable mention for USILA All-American team and earned first-team All-Empire 8 Conference accolades in 2024, program firsts in both awards… Martin commenced the season as the program's career leader for points (146) and goals (96)…Midfielder Adam Willig (Buffalo, NY/Amherst Central), a grad student, Johnson, and Marrone were voted co-captains.
