NEW YORK, N.Y. – A game-tying Russell Sage College three-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark in this afternoon's 73-70 non-conference loss at John Jay.
The Gators (3-2), which shot 48.1 percent from the field, erased a double-digit second half deficit to get within one on three separate occasions in the final minute, including with six seconds remaining, before dropping the Saturday matinee.
Junior Trevor Green (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh/HVCC) topped all players with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting. The guard, who led RSC in scoring for the third time on the young campaign, added six rebounds, six steals, and five assists. He averaged 18.0 points on 48.1 percent shooting, 8.0 rebounds, 4.5 steals, and 3.5 assists in the 1-1 week.
Junior guard Mike McLaughlin (Clearwater, FL/Clearwater) went a perfect five-for-five from the field, including three-of-three beyond the arc, en route to a season-high 13 points, while senior guard Noah Girard (Glens Falls, NY/Glens Falls), the program's all-time leader for made three-pointers with 119, tallied 12 points.
Sophomore forward Avery Oduro-Dompreh (Elkridge, MD/Oakland Mills) grabbed 13 rebounds, a game-high, to go along with eight points.
John Jay (4-2) had three players score in twin figures. Sophomore guard Syl Granda registered a double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way.
Down 37-36 at the break, the host Bloodhounds used a 21-4 run spanning 9:13, to hold a 13-point, 66-53 advantage with 6:36 remaining. The Gators answered by netting 13 of the ensuing 14 points across 5:38 to trail by one, 67-66 with 58 seconds left. From there, JJC went 6-of-7 at the foul line to stay ahead.
Looking ahead, RSC returns to the Kahl Campus Center on Tuesday as they host Mt. St. Mary College. The program will be hosting a meet and greet following the 5:00 pm contest as part of its "Take a Kid to a Game" promotion.
